Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about travel insurance for Ukraine, answered

General

Is travel insurance mandatory for Ukraine?

Travel insurance is legally mandatory for journalists, reporters, correspondents, media representatives, and opinion leaders under Article 7 of the Law of Ukraine on Insurance. For all other travelers — tourists, business visitors, students — it is strongly recommended but not legally required. However, border officials may request proof of insurance upon entry.

What does travel insurance for Ukraine cover?

Coverage includes emergency medical care (up to €250), hospital treatment (up to €400 for up to 10 days), COVID-19 treatment (up to €500), medical transportation (up to €120), repatriation of remains (up to €2,000), outpatient care with prescriptions, emergency dental, and medical evacuation. The Extended plan also covers war risk and private clinic access.

How much does Ukraine travel insurance cost?

Standard coverage starts from approximately €3.30 for 3 days, with additional days at about €1.00 each. Extended coverage starts from approximately €5.32 for 3 days, with additional days at about €1.60 each. For example, a one-week Standard plan costs about €7.30, while Extended costs about €11.72.

What is the minimum coverage required?

The minimum recommended coverage is €30,000 per insured event, which is what both the Standard and Extended plans provide. This amount meets the requirements for visa applications and is the standard expected at Ukrainian borders.

Who provides the insurance?

The insurance is provided by EUROINS, a licensed insurance company in Ukraine. EUROINS policies are recognized and accepted at all Ukrainian border crossings.

Purchasing

How quickly do I receive my certificate?

Your insurance certificate is delivered instantly as a PDF to your email address. The entire process — from filling out the form to receiving your certificate — takes approximately 5 minutes.

What documents do I need to purchase?

You need a valid passport or travel document, your planned travel dates to Ukraine, and a payment method (credit or debit card). No additional paperwork is required.

Can I buy insurance after arriving in Ukraine?

While it's technically possible, we strongly recommend purchasing insurance before your trip. Having your certificate ready when you arrive at the border ensures a smooth entry process and means you're covered from the moment you enter the country.

What's the difference between Standard and Extended?

Both plans provide €30,000 coverage and include emergency medical, hospitalization, COVID-19, transport, and repatriation. The Extended plan adds war risk protection (passive war-related injuries) and access to private clinics with English-speaking staff. The cost difference is minimal — about €2 more for a 3-day trip.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my trip?

Full refund is available if cancelled 3 or more days before the coverage start date. No refund is available after coverage begins. If your visa is rejected, you may qualify for a refund with documentation from the embassy.

What durations are available?

Coverage is available for stays from 3 to 180 days. You select your travel dates when purchasing, and the price is calculated based on the duration.

Coverage

Does the insurance cover war-related risks?

The Extended plan covers passive war-related injuries — meaning injuries sustained as a bystander, not as an active participant in hostilities. Given the current situation in Ukraine, we strongly recommend Extended coverage for all travelers.

Is COVID-19 covered?

Yes. Both Standard and Extended plans cover COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment up to €500, including hospitalization if necessary.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Pre-existing medical conditions are generally not covered unless specifically declared during the application process and accepted by the insurer. If you have a pre-existing condition, contact the insurance provider for guidance.

Does it cover dental emergencies?

Yes. Emergency dental treatment for acute pain relief and urgent dental procedures is included in both Standard and Extended plans.

Are extreme sports covered?

Standard extreme sports activities may require an additional add-on. Activities like skydiving, bungee jumping, or high-altitude mountaineering are not covered by the base plans. Contact the provider if you plan to participate in such activities.

What is NOT covered by the insurance?

Exclusions include pre-existing conditions (unless declared), extreme sports without an add-on, alcohol or drug-related incidents, routine or elective medical procedures, and travel to areas against specific government advisories.

Border & Claims

Will border officials check my insurance?

Border officials may request to see your insurance certificate when entering Ukraine. While it's not always checked, having it readily available ensures a smooth border crossing experience.

Can I show a digital copy at the border?

Yes. Digital copies of your insurance certificate (PDF on phone, tablet, or laptop) are accepted at Ukrainian borders. However, we recommend also carrying a printed copy as backup in case of device issues.

Is the insurance valid at all Ukrainian borders?

Yes. EUROINS insurance certificates are recognized and accepted at all Ukrainian border crossings, including land borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova.

What should I do in a medical emergency?

Call 103 (ambulance) or 112 (general emergency), then contact the 24/7 emergency assistance number on your insurance certificate. The insurance provider will help coordinate your care, potentially arrange direct payment to the facility, and guide you through the process.

How do I file an insurance claim?

Contact the 24/7 assistance line first. Gather all medical documentation (reports, receipts, prescriptions). Submit your claim with supporting documents within 30 days. Simple claims are processed in 1-4 weeks, complex claims in 4-8 weeks.
