Travel Insurance for Ukraine by Trip Length in 2027: 3, 7, 14, and 30 Days

10 min read

These policies cover from 3 to 180 days per traveller. The starting price covers the first 3 days: €3.56 for Standard and €5.75 for Extended. Each additional day costs €1.08 on Standard or €1.73 on Extended. Neither plan has a deductible. Select every calendar day from entry into Ukraine through departure, not just the nights you book.

Ukraine remains under martial law and active armed conflict. Insurance cannot reduce the physical risk of travel. As checked on 24 September 2026, UK advice is regional; read the current FCDO advice for Ukraine before deciding whether to travel. The FCDO says travel against its advice could invalidate travel insurance. Australia sets an overall Do not travel level for Ukraine. France's advice, university rules and any existing policy may impose separate conditions. Check them before purchase and again before departure.

For a French student weighing 10 days against 30 days in Kyiv, the decision has two parts. First, choose dates that cover the full stay. Then compare the plans' fixed limits, exclusions and passive war-risk provision. The European Health Insurance Card is not a substitute for travel cover. EHIC rights apply to necessary treatment during a temporary stay in another EU country, as EU temporary-stay guidance explains, and Ukraine is outside the EU.

Choose the duration first, then compare the two plans

Travel Insurance Ukraine distributes these travel-medical policies, underwritten by EUROINS, for foreign nationals who are non-residents of Ukraine and travelling lawfully in Ukraine. Standard has a sum insured of 100,000 UAH, approximately €2,000. Extended has a €30,000 sum insured and includes passive war risk. Standard does not include passive war risk.

Policy length Standard Extended
3 days €3.56 €5.75
7 days €7.88 €12.66
14 days €15.44 €24.75
30 days €32.72 €52.40

At 30 days, the prices are €32.72 and €52.40. Extra days extend the policy period. They do not raise either sum insured, remove exclusions or increase Standard's individual benefit limits. A longer stay is therefore more than a question of adding days.

No Ukrainian law in force makes travel insurance compulsory for foreign visitors in general. It is strongly recommended, and border officials may still ask for proof. Entry permission, university approval and insurance are separate issues. Check the rules for your passport and institution before committing to travel.

For 3 days, avoid an uncovered border day

A three-day policy can suit a short visit only when its dates match the border crossings. A common mistake is to insure three hotel nights when arrival, departure or a border delay puts the traveller in Ukraine on four calendar days. Cover must span the full time in Ukraine.

Note your expected entry and exit dates before opening the form. A late arrival on the first day and an early departure on the last still count as days to include. If a three-night booking runs from Monday to Thursday but departure is on Friday, select four days rather than three.

Keep the issued certificate with your travel documents. Check its details, your passport details and the selected dates before leaving. A three-day plan costs €3.56 for Standard or €5.75 for Extended, but a low premium does not reduce the importance of accurate dates.

For 7 days, decide what the plan difference buys

For a seven-day trip, compare Extended's €30,000 sum insured and passive war-risk cover with Standard's 100,000 UAH sum insured and no passive war-risk cover. The premiums are €12.66 and €7.88 respectively. The €4.78 difference buys both features; it is not a separate price for war cover.

Passive war risk has a specific and limited meaning. Extended can cover a civilian injured as a bystander in a conflict-related event, indirect effects of hostilities, emergency evacuation from an affected area, and hospitalisation for civilian injuries caused by explosions or shelling. It does not cover active participation in hostilities, armed-force service, military-contractor work or deliberate travel into an active combat zone against official advisories. If an event is recognised as a terrorist act, ask the insurer how that exclusion interacts with the war-risk option.

Territorial limits apply before any claim question. Cover excludes areas of active hostilities and territories temporarily occupied by Russia as listed by Ukrainian authorities, places within 50 km of those areas, and areas under a special entry, stay or exit regime. The list can change. Before choosing either plan for Kyiv, check the current official list and ask the insurer how it applies to your destination and route. Treatment received, or injury sustained, outside the insured territory is not covered. Read how passive war risk is defined with the policy wording.

For 14 days, test activities and health needs against the wording

For 14 days, focus less on how full the itinerary is and more on whether planned activities and health needs fit the exclusions. The premiums are €15.44 for Standard and €24.75 for Extended. Neither plan covers injuries from any sport or physical exercise. Do not assume an informal, recreational or low-intensity activity is covered.

Cover applies to acute illness or an accident during the policy period. Terms include emergency care, urgent inpatient treatment, diagnostics and medication, subject to the policy. They exclude planned treatment, routine check-ups and treatment sought by travelling for care. Mental-health treatment is excluded, as is planned pregnancy care and pregnancy care from the 29th week.

A flare-up of a condition treated or medicated in the six months before the trip is excluded unless it threatens life or permanent disability and the assistance company confirms it. Long-term conditions, including diabetes, cancer and tuberculosis, have emergency care only, up to five days per event. If your course or leisure plans include physical activity, or a medical condition may need attention, ask the insurer before buying. Check the policy terms and the certificate benefit schedule.

For 30 days, separate the policy period from the benefit limits

For a month in Kyiv, a 30-day policy costs €32.72 for Standard or €52.40 for Extended. Standard's headline sum insured is 100,000 UAH, approximately €2,000, while Extended's is €30,000. A sum insured is not a single fund automatically available for every type of treatment.

Standard also has per-benefit limits: emergency medical care up to €250, medical transport up to €120, COVID-19 treatment up to €500, hospital treatment up to €400 for up to 10 days, and repatriation of remains up to €2,000. Check both the overall sum insured and the benefit schedule. These figures do not establish what a hospital will charge or what a claim will pay.

Three separate clocks apply. A 30-day policy covers the selected 30-day trip period. Standard's hospital-treatment benefit is limited to up to 10 days. Immigration permission is governed separately. A month of insurance is not 30 days of hospital cover, and it does not grant a right to remain for a month. Extra insured days do not increase Standard's stated benefit limits. Ask the assistance service whether it can confirm local hospital arrangements, direct billing and language support for your stay. Do not assume a hospital will accept the policy or bill the insurer directly.

Set the dates as you would complete the form

Buy before travelling. Events that happen before the policy starts are excluded. Follow these steps before selecting a duration.

  1. Record the calendar date you expect to enter Ukraine.
  2. Record the calendar date you expect to leave Ukraine.
  3. Count both dates and every calendar date between them.
  4. Select that number of days on the form.
  5. When the certificate arrives, compare its start and end dates with your written entry-and-exit plan.

For example, a student arriving on 5 June and leaving on 14 June needs 10 calendar days, even if accommodation is booked for fewer nights. A stay from 5 June through 4 July requires 30 calendar days. Match the selected duration to the inclusive count, not to an informal label such as a week, fortnight or month.

If a train cancellation, border delay or uncertain return date could alter the plan, ask the distributor before buying which options apply to the product and your circumstances. Do not assume a policy can be changed or extended after purchase. Travellers aged 70 or over cannot buy through the online form and should ask about the available route before making travel arrangements.

If you need care, contact the assistance service immediately using the number on the certificate. Follow the doctor's instructions and cooperate with the insurer's investigation. If you pay for treatment yourself, send the full set of documents within 30 calendar days of seeking care. Keep medical records, invoices and proof of payment. The claims guide sets out the practical sequence.

For stays beyond 90 days, check immigration and the 180-day ceiling

Most visa-free visitors from the EU and EEA, the UK, the US, Canada and Turkey may stay for up to 90 days. This is not universal, and previous time in Ukraine can matter. For a longer academic arrangement, confirm the rule for your passport and planned entry with a Ukrainian embassy or consulate. Insurance cannot create immigration permission.

The policy maximum is 180 days. A longer stay requires separate insurance arrangements. Ask the distributor what cover may be available and ask the relevant immigration authority what permission and documents are required. Do this before travel; the 180-day insurance limit is not evidence that you are eligible to stay.

Recheck conditions close to departure. Ireland's advice, for example, has a Do Not Travel security status and recommends comprehensive insurance including medical repatriation or evacuation. Government advice differs. Ask your own foreign ministry, university and insurer if their positions could affect your planned Kyiv stay or the validity of its insurance.

Before you buy: date and plan checklist

  • Write down your intended Ukraine entry date.
  • Write down your intended Ukraine exit date.
  • Count every calendar day from entry through exit, inclusively.
  • Match the selected policy duration to that inclusive day count.
  • Check the issued certificate against your planned entry and exit dates.
  • Compare Standard's 100,000 UAH sum insured with Extended's €30,000 sum insured.
  • Compare Standard's individual medical and transport benefit limits.
  • Check the current territorial restrictions against your intended route and destination.
  • Ask how planned sport or physical exercise affects cover.
  • Ask before purchase what applies if your return date is uncertain.
  • Check your passport's immigration conditions for the intended length of stay.

Trip-length questions

How should I insure a 10-day stay in Ukraine?

Insure all 10 calendar days from entry into Ukraine through exit. Count arrival and departure dates even when they are partial days, then select a policy period that matches that inclusive count. Confirm that the issued certificate shows the same start and end dates before you travel.

Can I buy a policy for only two days in Ukraine?

These Ukraine policies have a minimum duration of three days. Select three days only when that period covers every calendar day you will be in Ukraine. If the crossing or departure could move into another calendar day, select dates that include it and ask before buying about the uncertainty.

What matters most when choosing Standard or Extended for a week?

For a seven-day Ukraine trip, compare Extended's €30,000 sum insured and passive war-risk cover with Standard's 100,000 UAH sum insured and no passive war-risk cover. Extended costs €12.66 and Standard costs €7.88. Both are subject to the policy exclusions and territorial limits.

Would a nearby missile strike be covered under Extended passive war risk?

Extended can cover a civilian injured as a bystander by explosions or shelling, subject to the policy terms. The location must be within the insured territory, and the traveller must not be participating in hostilities or otherwise fall within an exclusion. Check the current territorial list and ask the insurer about your route.

Does buying 30 days increase Standard's medical benefit limits?

No, buying a 30-day Standard policy does not increase its stated medical benefit limits. Standard lists emergency medical care up to €250, medical transport up to €120 and hospital treatment up to €400 for up to 10 days. The policy period, sum insured and individual benefit limits are separate features.

What should I ask if my university's rules or a delay could change my plans?

Ask both your university and the insurer before purchase, because their rules can affect different parts of the trip. Ask the university whether travel is permitted and the insurer whether that position affects cover. Also ask the distributor what applies if cancellation or delay changes your return date; do not assume a post-purchase extension is available.
